I, Storyteller

“The stars are given. The constellations we make. That is to say, stars exist in the cosmos, but constellations are the imaginary lines we draw between them, the readings we give the sky, the stories we tell..”

-Rebecca Solritt

“Storming the Gates of Paradise

People say that humans are addicted to stories. They love to listen to stories- they will look for stories even in the darkest corners, and they are eager to tell their own stories. Whether as little children it was sitting in front of grandparents, or reading a dusty old novel we found in an unused corner of the library, or chatting with the stranger with a splitting smile and flowers in his hand at the bus station,  or complaining about the price of milk to the cashier, we are surrounded by stories everywhere. Every beating heart, every torn piece of paper, every abandoned house, they all have their stories to tell.

Even at night, our brain is busy telling us stories in the form of dreams.Us recalling our long day and sharing it with our spouse, retelling some funny incident to our best friend, sharing our first-hand experience on a topic someone asks advice about, thinking in the shower about how a social experience might go- even we are telling stories all the time.

So, as fellow human beings, why don’t we all open up to each other? Why not look out for and lend ears to people who have so much storytelling to do, and no audience to impress? Why not share our own sadness and frustration and happiness with others instead of locking them inside the oblivion of our minds?

Let’s change something not only in our lives, but other’s as well.

Let’s make a difference.

The Choice to Not Have Kids

no children
Everyone I know has children, while I love being able to help out and babysit them… I’ve come to my own conclusion that I do not want children. Trust me, this isn’t against anyone. Childhood was wonderful and almost reminiscent of a time when you could allow kids to run around the block and get into trouble without having to wear a helmet all the while flying down the hill on your bicycle. The saying goes times have changed. As a young woman that not only wants to choose a career, it’s been decided that I wouldn’t want to put a child through the agony of possible neglect because my career would get in the way.

Some individuals can envision themselves with a family, well I do to but I consider my friends my family and whomever I end up with hopefully thinks the same. And no I don’t think that anyone that has children is ruining their lives as people tend to think. It comes down to one thing, it’s your decision and it’s your life. Do with it what you want, I’ve just chosen to do this instead. Getting up without a seconds notice to end up driving for 20 plus hours to the Southern tip of California is something that has happened all too much within the past two years of my life. Why change something that could involve a sudden trip that involves world travel?

After watching close friends and friends in high school get married and have children, the gears in my mind started to turn and ask questions. Since I was 19, children (yes or no) has come up. There is far too much that I want to accomplish, far too much to do and plus isn’t that a question I should ask myself instead of getting the stares of…well why not? Personally too many things are changing to allow myself to have a child, I know I’m not ready nor will I ever be. I choose to be this way. And that’s okay. But if you need a babysitter I will completely help out it’s just one of my own is out of the question, I’m not ready to settle.

This just goes to show that peer pressure still in a way happens but from a biological stand point. The answers to the question to “Do you want to have kids?” can be answered as ‘yes’ and ‘no.’

When your hear ‘Tyrese Gibson’ what comes to mind? Jodi and Yvette? The inspirational videos he post frequently on his Facebook and Instagram pages? Or maybe it’s one of your favorite 90’s jams. Whatever it may be, you all probably concur that Tyrese is a talented man of many words, especially when it comes being real, but positive. Tyrese, also known as Black Ty recently opened up about his personal life, fatherhood and so much more with interviewers on his ‘Dumb Shit’ interview.

If you follow Tyrese on any of the social networks he’s linked with, then there are several things you already know about him. He has an album, ‘Black Rose’ dropping on July 7, 2015, he’s going to keep it real (despite feelings being hurt), he’s loves giving advice and most of all he is a man of God and he loves Shayla, his 7-year old daughter.

Black Rose not only signifies Tyrese’s final solo album, but its a compilation of many achievements he has achieved. Tyrese has chosen to put together and present ‘Black Rose Universe’ to his family, friends and fans. From being granted joint custody of Shayla, to starring in a musical (Shames) alongside Jennifer Hudson,  to writing another book, as well everything else he has going for himself is what he considers Black Rose Universe.

‘Black Rose’  is a double album which has 10 Rap tracks and 10 R&B tracks. Tyrese compares his album to Ushers’ ‘Confessions.’

I be doing dumb shit that I’m ashamed of.  I feel like this album is my most honest album, it’s my most uncomfortable album and it’s my truth, even if it embarrasses me, I’m telling my truth.

The singles on Black Rose each signify something from Tyrese’s past relationships.

I be doing dumb shit and I ashamed of it, but I’ll be waiting on you because your love is unbelievable.

Each of the words are also titles to his songs; songs in which he express himself on and make confessions on, just as he did on ‘Dumb Shit’ which features Snoop Dogg. If you haven’t heard the song or video yet check it out!

Tyrese is also known for  his acting skills, from ‘Baby Boy’  to ‘Biker Boyz’ to the ‘Fast and Furious’ sequel, he’s always been able to jump into any character and give the directors, producers and the audience exactly what they want- a good show. ‘Furious 7,’ the latest film in the ‘Fast and Furious’  sequel is about more revenge and ‘hide-n-seek.’  Check out the trailer.

The film had been put on hold for nearly two years after the death of Paul Walker, who was not only a co-star of Black Ty’s, but also a good friend.

Paul Walker was literally an angel. Paul Walker was the nicest guy in the world that you could ever know and meet. He was a sincere soul. He was the nicest guy ever and I think the world knew it. So it’s kind of hard to let it go, to shake it. We had so many different moments of laughter and exchange of stories about our daughters and just fatherhood.

Tyrese recalled the day when he and Paul Walker had become best friends, after realizing the two share similar taste in women. To this day, Gibson says that it’s still hard to get over their ‘brothers’ death, especially now that it’s closer to the release date of the film and he isn’t ‘here’ to live the moment with them.

Aside from the album and Furious 7, fans should also be on the lookout for Tyrese’s new book, also titled ‘Black Rose’, which is a follow-up from the New York Times bestsellers, ‘How to Get Out of Your Own Way’ and ‘Manology’ (co-authored with Rev. Run). He also as audio book  coming out, as well as a documentary which is ‘The Making of Black Rose.’

Although Tyrese is a millionaire celebrity and has a lot going for himself he’s modest and he doesn’t take anything in life for granted. His videos and messages are inspirational to those who may need some words of wisdom to keep their faith and remind them that God is on their side.

I have 1.2 billion souls, spirits and hearts I can reach with my motivational and inspirational messages.

Tyrese considers his fame and stardom a waste if does not share his love, words and wisdom with others because that may help someone else become successful.

In connection to everything he does, Mr. Gibson is also involved with several charities, including, but not limited to #TheLoveCircleFoundation, which he founded. He got this name from his social his online social network community. This charity has many missions, one which includes ‘giving back.’ Although Tyrese has not went public with this organization, he will do so in the very near future and he want everyone (whether you’re involved with it or not) to remember this message:

Forgive faster, hug longer, kiss slower and any issues and dysfunctions that’s happening in your life between family, friends and loved ones- if you believe that, that relationship is worth fixing, put the issues on the table, pick them all apart and do any means necessary to not allow for unresolved issues to stop you from connecting from your family, friends and loved ones more often.

Throughout everything Tyrese has done and achieved as an actor, a singer, a rapper, an entrepreneur, etc. that’s not what he wants to be remembered by when it’s all said and done.

I want people to be able to say I used my God given stage, to start a movement and inspire and give people permission to want to be significant and do great things.

Things to do before you die- Festival of Colors

Were you the “artist of the future” as a child, coloring and doodling and sketching wherever you could, including walls of your house? Did you love to prank on your friends, but in a harmless sort of way so that both of you ended in laughter and giggles? Wouldn’t you love to revisit those childhood days and have a slice if that carefree life again? Life has this crazy rule- if you really, really want something with all your heart, you always get it. The festival of Colors has a surefire way of bringing those nostalgic memories back.

Holi, the festival of Colors, the festival of love, is a Hindu festival celebrated in India, Nepal, and mainly South East Asia. However with the assent of globalization, it has also gained popularity in parts North America and Europe as well. It is a spring festival celebrated according to the Hindu calendar, usually in the month of March.

With the ritualistic bonfire the previous night, signifying the victory of good over evil, the morning starts with a frolic of colored powder and water balloons and giggles- mostly coming from the little ones- and screams-coming from the surprised adults who have been targeted with the makeshift weapons for the day. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join the “hurly burly” of colors and music that follows. Bhaang, the traditional intoxicating drink, is one of the surprises that adds flavor to the fest. The evenings however, are meant for sobering up and spreading cheer by visiting friends and relatives.

People say that festivals are just excuses to mingle with loved ones, to forget all fears for some time and to become a child again. Holi is a perfect example of how friends and family add colors to your life, both literally and figuratively. Bollywood had portrayed the spirit of Holi very accurately in the following video from the 2013 movie “Yeh Jawani hain Deewani”.

Let’s do something different. Let’s make a difference in our lives.

Rihanna is Changing History

 Rihanna and Dior

After Rihanna was revealed as the newest face for Dior she also has a lot to celebrate because recently she was named the creative director for the clothing line PUMA. Then to top it all off she has a new animated film coming out called Home released by the DreamWorks production company.

Starting with her new home at Dior, the french house hold name went on record stating that Rihanna was now apart of their modeling team and Rihanna has even stated that she felt “fantastic” about the involvement. Even more so, she just so happens to be the first black woman to be apart of the Dior world.

As the new creative director for PUMA, where they even named Rihanna a global ambassador. What caused PUMA to go with Rihanna as their definitive decision? Well she gave them the idea that instead of just using a face to sell their product they should direct more of their attention to women and the women who want to wear sportswear. Funny enough sportswear for women, in a way doesn’t exist like we think it should. But thanks to Rihanna she has taken her full control to change that idea, also the company expressed that Rihanna’s work ethic was one of the top notch reasons they wanted to work with her.

Now for the new DreamWorks film Home, an animated film about a teenager girl who ends up loosing her mother to an alien race that is relocating people to a Desert Planet. The teenage girl named Tip ends up on this wild adventure with an alien in the events of finding her mother and returning to her home. With the overall message of the bonds that are created between a mother and daughter, this film is sure to break a few hearts as well as having the audience cheering at wonderment in the end.

Rihanna has a full plate… however, that does not mean she isn’t backing down. We’ve needed someone who can help shape the world in a way that helps women and not present the image that is being given out that ‘seems’ right instead of what is in reality a true woman.

Education? Oh, you mean my grades?

“The love of learning,

The sequestered nooks,

And all the sweet serenity of books.”

 -H.W. Longfellow

‘The love of learning’ –someone needs to heave a big, theatrical sigh here-  is something seen once in a blue moon nowadays. Education and knowledge have lost their true meaning enlightenment. Education nowadays serves as a means, to add a degree to our resume in hopes of getting employed. No one goes to school or college considering themselves fortunate enough to receive blessings in the temple to knowledge; they sulk and mope, brawling over their home works and examination. Barring a few rare cases, no student on earth opens his/her text books in the light of attaining knowledge, rather than studying for the class tests late at night.

Indeed, education has lost its sole purpose, and the present generation, so “allergic to books”, doesn’t know what it’s missing out. The art of Picasso and Michaelangelo, the theories of Aryabhatta and Chanakya, the discoveries of Newton, the inventions of da Vinci, the valor of Napoleon- there is a lesson to be learnt from each of them, and this is what knowledge is. This is what education is supposed to be- the biggest milestones of humanities, summarised and presented to us in the form of books.

Education is not merely a matter of passing examinations, but all students more or less, believe it otherwise and follow this like religion. “Unless you study, you will fail,” has become the new mantra instead of “unless you study, you won’t know, you won’t learn.”

Education is supposed to enlighten, be daylight to the darkness of unawareness. Instead, society has turned it into something else- an eclipse rather, shackling our freedom and sanity. Receiving education- going to schools, colleges and even further studies- is no longer something people look forward to; rather it’s a phase they have to go through, whether they like it or not. The society, family, friends, teachers build up a pressure- a tomb made of bricks of home works and cement of coaching classes that seem to bury us alive. They are chained to books, day and night, so much that they begin to resent what is the only way of enlightening our minds.

The education system needs to be changed, the tension needs to be de-pressurized and society needs to understand that getting A+ is not the only way of achieving happiness; that education is not merely a matter of passing exams and getting a degree.

Lets make a difference.
