Save the world, one tab at a time

What if you could provide fresh water to someone for a year, or protect acres of rainforest, by doing nothing but browsing the internet?

Sounds dreamy, but Alex Groth and Kevin Jennison have turned this into a reality with their free app, “tabs for a cause”.

This app works on a very simple principle. If installed, the app takes the user to a special page each time a new tab is opened, instead of the empty browser screen. This customizable homescreen contains a few advertisement banners, which is the source of money for this non-profit organization. That’s it. That’s all you need to do. Install the app and let the advertisements run. No clicking on any links, no surveys, and no actual donations. Much of the revenue collected from the advertisers are then donated to charities linked up with the organisation, including  Educate, Water.org, Room to Read, Human Rights Watch, Conservation International, International Peace Institute and Save the Children. Moreover, the users get to choose which category they want their “hearts” or points to donated to.

The more tabs you open, the more you level up, and the more you save the world. It’s as simple as that. Get the app here.

Lets make a difference.
